The Greatest Break-Up Story Ever Told

Sita Sings The Blues by Nina Paley

Do you appreciate 1920’s blues and tales of great love and its trials? Do yourself a favor and watch Sita Sings the Blues! It’s enchanting, original, and an absolute gem.

Sita Sings The Blues is an animated film based on the Ramayana, an epic Hindu poem that describes the love story between Rama, an ancient King, and Sita (see-tah), his beautiful wife. It’s billed as “the Greatest Break-Up Story Ever Told.” It’s filled with the trials, tribulations, battles, evil monsters, and bravery necessary to epic tales. Laced with absolutely wonderful jazz vocals by Annette Hanshaw (I love her voice, and adore the music!), it’s a story within a story. We have the ancient tale along with a modern day story of lost love, and three shadow puppets narrators that are hilarious! Several animation styles are used in the film, and I liked them all.

I still smile when I think of this movie. 🙂  Enjoy!
