Life, art, and spirit, all are works in progress. You can talk about your experiences, creative work, and spiritual life separately, but there’s no real separation. This blog is going be like that too, with all things interconnected. Each post will be a snapshot of a moment. Everything you see, read, and experience becomes a part of your life and your art.

Making photographs is one of those times that my mental chatter is effortlessly quieted. You know those times you’re happily absorbed in what you’re doing? Most of the time there’s no internal discussion about how or what to shoot; it’s an in-the-moment activity. This may be why it can be a challenge for me to talk about my work; I don’t really think about it in words. This may also be one of the reasons I love it so much. It’s a joyful feeling to be in stillness and appreciation for where you are.

The way I go about learning nearly anything is to study intensely at the beginning, trying everything out for myself. There are certain things that can only be learned while actually doing what you’ve read about, making your own connections. By the time you study and work enough, what-to-do-next becomes almost second nature; it’s not necessary to think of the steps, or consciously decide what to do. You can flow with the process. Flowing with your intuition, combined with knowledge, becomes a kind of alchemy. There’s such joy in working this way. It feels almost magical.

One of my favorite kind of days is being out shooting flowers. A wonderful side benefit of the day is that when I close my eyes that night, all I can see in my mind’s eye are flowers. I love that!

What are you doing on a day that fills you with joy and enthusiasm? Feel free to comment. I’d love to hear from you! It’s going to be fun to show my work, meet some nice people, and share interesting information.

  • Hey, what a lovely site and great first blog! I love your shop mini and so glad your ‘space pod’ photo is on here too…I love that one.

What makes this blog resonate with me is that it put into words something I myself had not articulated…the joy is in the experimenting and being one with the moment, which also happens to correlate with life in general. I love that you are in tune with that and wonder why I jump out of tune so often. So thanks for sharing that 🙂

Beauty: The quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit. (Webster’s)

To take the beauty one sees through an attentive, sensitive soul like Karen’s and then creatively express it for the enjoyment and wonder of others is extraordinary. My appreciation for the artistry of this woman goes beyond description.

    Beauty…absolutely!

I enjoyed the blog very much. It is interesting to read about how the creation process and your state of being are one. It demonstrates the interconnectedness within ourselves and the world when in the creative flow. ~Sharrose
